I have a recent experience trying to update everything to the last
version here.
Rails 2.3.4, MySQL 5.1 and others...
After a few tests it became clear MySQL 5.1 doesn't work well with
Rails (don't ask me why).
My solution: Uninstall MySQL 5.1 and re-install 5.0.
