Just tried in on my system and it seems to work fine, that is if you're talking
about the enable/disable of the XMPP type alert within the setup.
If you're talking about something else then please explain clearly what you
exactly mean.

Just dont forget that you can damage system by changing registry

So the outline of the app is:
* External check
* Local or remote registry
* Authentication
* 1 or more registry keys
* 1 or more data types
* Alert if key exists/doesn't exist
* Alert if key value equals/doesn't equal some value
* Allow key value to be corrected

Can you expand on the registry check question?

This is probably off topic, but maybe not.
We are implementing vmWare ESX and VI in our production environment.
Since the host servers are rather well protected, having agents to talk
with them directly would probably be really nifty. I know that ESX runs
on a proprietary Linux core, so a Linux a
Hello Dirk,

Just go to windows update, install everything and your pc should

Not sure to understand.
If you're talking about the SSH-server in SA, that is to give info on the SA
system.
The agents do checks on the remote system and SA can use them to get the
status of the checks.

Hello Dirk,
IMO, instead of some sort of agent its will be much better to improve
SSH controls, i.e. to be able to do all kind of configuration changes
and reports available from GUI. Ones its complete anyone can make his
own agent for any OS-type or java-based.
Thursday, February 1, 2007, 5:20
1) we use the "time" as given by the OS, so if the OS does it correctly,
then SA too
2) you can always write a check for that

Currently it's possible to do an FTP check via Servers Alive, were we "just"

Is this something that is "needed"? (an FTP check that does not only a

You can still use it to do checks over a WAN :-)

The initial idea behind the agent was accesing system that are well protected.
For examples checking system that are in a DMZ, were you can have access to the
system over ONE port and not several (what is needed if you want to use Netbios
like for the service/process/diskspace checks).
Dirk
Well, yes, that's what we do at the moment. But the point of the agent is
surely to minimise the number of checks that have to run across the WAN,
replacing them with a single local agent.
Am I missing the point somewhere? (Entirely possible - it's early in the day
and I had a late night...)
and can't you access that remote service using the snmp protocol?

Oh, gosh, sorry, should have listed that too. We do this on a few servers and
have big problems trying to run the check over the WAN.

disk space, process and service are good but a critical one for us would be the
ability to check the event log as this is the check which causes the most
problem over a remote connection. We have at least 20 different sites with an

OK, I can live without database. However the more I consider it, the more I

scenario is that we have servers in our European sites which are connected to a
standalone UPS, linked for management via a USB or serial lead. The
The agents will not have all checks that Servers Alive has. The agent will be
a subset. The current win32 agent (no not yet in beta), does diskspace,
process and service checks. The agent is basicly only needed whne you have
restricted network access to a remote system/site.
Dirk Bulinckx
Win32 is actually the critical one for us. (Is that agent available? Are you
looking for beta testers, Dirk?) I'd want it to do all the existing Windows
checks - process, service, perfmon, diskspace, plus database stuff. Ideally it
would do SNMP too - to check for example a non-networked UPS co
For what it's worth, I'd find that facility really useful too.
