Apologies for wasting your time.
The DNS address I was using was mistakenly resolving to two different IP addresses. Hence Servers Alive was failling becaue it was checking the wrong IP / wrong host.
Sorted now by slapping the DNS administrator (who happens to be me:) )

think this is related to a bug within SA with the alerts.
Edit
the alert, goto the WHEN tab and check the "When host is down.." option.
This will probably checked, uncheck it and try again. Editing the entry
will however put the check mark back (<- that's the bug).
