I had the same problem and it works for me with 'security = 770' setting in
the share (using 3.0.2a as well). So ACLs usable, as far as I can understand
'force * mode' doesn't work (w/ ACL?).

I've just installed the samba-2.2.7-Tru64-OSF5.1 kit on
my alpha system and cant login to swat as root.
Login as a normal user is OK, and root-login can be achieved if
I use 'swat -a' in the inetd.conf entry.

I know an unorthodox way of solving that.
You may run msconfig and edit the Startup section. Simply uncheck the desktop entry at
the end of the list. At restart you have to confirm the change you just have made and
you will get rid of the desktop problem.

directory/desktop settings - is visible in about every directory on the
roaming profiles: desktop, autostart, quickstart, etc.
