the Samba team makes constant changes to keep up with MS upgrades.
If you want to downgrade Samba, just downgrade it, doesn't make sense to
downgrade whole OS
Might be, that you need only update your smb.conf to get to working
condition, some features are simply deprecated.

download/install nmap for windows and scan your SL 6.9 box and see if
the VNC server port is visible to your client.
If you log on the SL box, you can check, if the vnc runs eg by:
netstat -tulpn | grep -i vnc

i use KDE 4 on my SL 6.x for years, with no problem. The SL comes with
basic Gnome 3 by default. But be ready for transition from KDE 3 -> KDE 4.
If you want to use KDE 4, then you need to install it specifically.

If 'window in window' is problem, run the vncserver on the kvm guest OS
with vncclient on the host OS in fullscreen - problem solved.
