It really depends what you're backing up. For my own use I put a
very simple backup script in my home directory in all of my shell
accounts that goes something like this:
cd ; tar cz | ssh myuser@mybox "dd of=~/backups/shellname.tar.gz"

Half way. The issue is really that all of the consumer grade PDAs on
the market (at least that I am aware of) are designed to be very
simple and convenient with security
