It sounds like you've got a short in the wiring someplace. Remove all of the
wiring for the starter up to the battery and go over it with a fine tooth comb.
Make sure that the ground on the transaxle is in place and that your battery
connections are in good shape and clean.

Probably the negative(small side) of the starter wiring is contacting the
block and engaging the starter. The wires run very close to the block and can
get offset and touch.

I got my bosch rebuilt unit for $70 at murray's discount auto parts with a lifetime
warrenty... I had an old starter with me to match up to make sure it fit (like I
ALWAYS do at discount auto parts stores) so I also got out of the $25 core charge..
even has a heat shield built on! it really seem
what ever came stock on a 1986 Dodge Omni turbo is the exact same for the 86
Shelby GLHS Omni..
there really isnt that many replacement parts that were that specific..

Thanks for all the info. The starter on my 86 GLHS has TURBO written on it?
I've haven't pulled it yet but I can see it has TURBO written (sticker) on the
case. So it must be different then a N/A Omni. I'm thinking it only came on
Turbo GLH.

If you might run a lawn mower battery for racing, gear reduction is a
great starter to have. Frankly, I wouldn't buy a reman starter
anywhere, I hear nothing but complaints about them. Go to the junkyard
and find a factory original one. ;)
