Then let me rephrase the question. If you had to pick a lie angle
for your club heads to come with that would be most likely to require the
least amount of bending to fit the most golfers, what would it
be?

You ar absolutely right T-flan. By my statement I was just stating that the majority of people I fit fall within the category I described. This is a general staement without considering all the parameters involved.

The problem here is with the use of the word "average". What is it?
Does it even exist? Average height? Average arm length? Average set-up
to the ball? Which?
I've fitted tall guys with 59 deg lies and short guys with 63 deg lies.
I used to play with a pro who was 6'7" tall. He played black do
If you work off the "mdern standard of 60 degree lie regardless of loft. I would think the average golfer would need 1 to 2 degree degree upright or 61-62 degree lie. With a 5 iron club length of 38".
In additoin the average golfer should use a putter at a length of 34" not the so called
Well, you have to start somewhere. 5 irons used to be "standard" 30/60.
30 deg loft, 60 deg lie. Now it's still about 60 deg lie, but about 27
deg loft as a result of peripheral weighting.
Suppose you're a mfr. What would you choose for "standards". "Average"
golfer? There isn't one.

You guys who do a lot of fitting - what 5-iron lie fits the 'average'
golfer? Recognizing, of course, that lie is an individual thing and
may vary significantly golfer to golfer. What seems to be where you
end up fitting most golfers?
Greg, personally, I anchor my irons around a 5-iron lie of 6

I suspect that they are trying to make lighter shafts which most likely
corresponds to a softer shaft. As the shaft gets softer the basic lie should
be more upright to compensate for the greater toe done deflection of the
soft
I have seen the new wood shafts are getting softer then shafts a couple of years ago.

I was
cruising some oem web sites and noticed Mizuno seems to have a broader range of
lie angle on their muscle back blades than on most of their cavity back
selection. Titleist has apparently decided upright is better with their 5 iron
set at 62 deg. Cleveland's lies are the
