One side of our business does pretty much exactly what you describe.
We also looked at Salesforce.com & thought it just was not for us.
We now use SugarCRM, hosted & customised by ITonTap.com - they have a number
of other event based companies as clients so we all share the benefits.

I don't have a silver bullet, but I regularly build and deploy hosted
SugarCRM instances for clients that can do all the things you are after.
Overall SugarCRM works well, but can also be a bit clunky at times. Either
way, check it out if you haven't already.
