Now that I think about it, ozone is used in bottled water for the same thing. One could try getting a good aquarium ozonater and sending the tube down the well and bubbling ozone into the water, or do it once it has been pumped up and is in a holding tank. That would almost cost free to operate.

Sounds like a good job for hydrogen peroxide, which can be purchased for around 50 cents/litre (US) as 50% strength solution. Safer than chlorine bleach I would think, and perhaps cheaper too. Recommended treatment concentration is around 1ml/15 litres from memory, but don't quote me on that. Kevi
