How about sketchup? You can add a Geo Location to your scene and then check "show terrain". This way, you can pick a nice area you like, expand the Geo Location as you wish (by "Add more Imagery") then export your selection *.obj. The biggest advantage you get from that is real-world scale and

I just checked 2014 features (on 2013 here) and no mention of Alembic, so I guess it is still not available out of the box. Does anyone know if AD are perhaps planning to include Softimage in the Alembic club anytime soon? I know I can go get Exocortex Crate to get Alembic support for Softimage.
