The purpose of the damper oil is to keep the pistom from rising too quickly and leaning the mixture out. When the butterfly valve opens under acceleration it causes a greater vacuun to be applied to the jet causing more fuel to flow while the damper prevents the piston from rising immediately

I always use engine oil. The heavier the grade the richer the mixture when you accelerate. Some folks use lighter oils. Normally I use 20W50 in my spitfire. Even when I used to own a Triumph in the UK and the car was kept outside and the temperature dropped below freezing that was what I used
