I doubt that the presence or lack of OD has
anything to do with it. I think all the transmissions older
than a certain date had the scroll.
Actually, the seal is really part of the bellhousing, not
the transmission. So, maybe you could upgrade an older seal-less
transmission by swapping in a ne
Your analysis is correct. (But the carb leak is a red herring).
The older 3-rail transmissions definitely did not have a real seal.
I'm not sure when they finally added the seal.
I have managed to make this same mistake a couple of times
over the years. I assume your clutch chatters like crazy

The front steering rack is held in place by a pair of U bolts with plates
and nuts on the bottom side of the frame mounts.
The TRF Spit catalog has a page from the factory parts book that shows
the optional "Continental Touring Kit". In addition to the usual hoses,
belts, bulbs, etc., it includes four(!) spare engine valves (but no head
gasket). I guess it was considered practical to fix a swallowed
valve by the side
Bill,
Does this Spitfire have an O.D. trans? The O.D. trans on a spitfire
does not have a seal per say on the input shaft of the trans. It does have a
"scroll seal" which is like a reverse thread around the shaft that causes
any oil riding up the shaft to return to the inside of the trans,a
How do I get that puppy off, I remove the bolts, but have not been able to
remove rack where it attaches to the suspension.
Help thanks

Hi Bill,
There is only a scroll seal on the gearbox input shaft, so it is perfectly
possible that gear oil has leaked into the bellho

Hi,
Thanks for the responses to my original post. I just wanted to give a
little more info on my Spit in case anyone was curious. I rebuilt and
balanced the engine about two years ago (high compression 1976 model)
and instaled ARP rod bolts, new timing chain, heavy duty valve springs,

OK genius, you got it spot on. I know as I just replaced the voltage
stabilizer and had to rehook that one last wire. Awkward guy as it keeps
trying to disappear and it hard to hold as you put the nuts back on the
mounts. Probably why it was not connected. Too hard for PO and they gave

Same thing - no, similar - yes.
Last summer I had the starter rebuilt and found it easier to put in and take
out without the oil pressure sending unit in place. My electric fue pump is
wire through that unit! After replacing the starter and the sending unit I
started it up and it ran for a minut

Dear listers
I am probably barking mad, but we are thinking of going on holiday
next July with Decibel. From Kent to South of France, local trips,
and back, or something between 2 to 3 000 miles...
What spare parts would you recommend as the "emergency kit" (knowing
fully well that Murphy and
