The committee discussion on this change was the in a 400 cubic foot enclosure,
it doesn’t matter where the sprinkler is relative to the shelf. Think about in
rack sprinklers and the product loads…. I agree there should be concern for
bumping the sprinkler but no one is loading the closet with
From an old fire guys perspective I’d be more concerned with accidental head
breakage than water dispersal.
Best.

Peter,
One thing to emphasize is that it says 400ft3 not ft2. So, the thought is if
you have mechanical equipment like a furnace, you're not really going to
have much room to store anything in this closet. An example would be a
closet with an 8ft. ceiling can only be 7ftx7ft. This is 49sqft or
Pete,
You are correct. Where the closet is less than 400 ft3, no clearance is
required below the deflector

My understanding had always been this was mainly related to shelves and the
like as an obstruction since the head is going to basically inundate the
closet. I believe it was Mr. Huggins that once reminded us that water isn't
like light and you don't have to see the head to get wet, as was a

Section 23.4.1.2 says minimum size for steel pipe is 1". The exceptions

I think 13 tells us in a round about way that 1/2" and 3/4" steel can only be
used as "Pilot Line" detector piping per Chapter 8 and Chapter 6. Look at Note
"B" in the allowed pipe size table in Chapter 6...it sends you to the pilot
line section in Chapter 8 and restricts those sizes to that
I have the 1985 book, and it wasn't allowed then.
Same rule as now, ½ x 1 ell to 1" drops.

The branchlines are 1", 1-1/4", etc. with a tee and the drop is ½" pipe to the
sprinkler heads. Where I would normally design a 1" drop, they used ½".

Code allows you to retrofit that with a 1/2 x1 ell and a 1 “ new drop if the
outlets are 1/2” off line
Could you elaborate?

NFPA 13 (2019 edition) states the following in two sections:
9.5.5.4 Closets. In all closets and compartments, including
those closets housing mechanical equipment, that are not
larger than 400 ft3 (11 m3) in size, a single sprinkler at the
highest ceiling level shall be sufficient without regard
I have a customer with an existing system that the fire marshal wants brought
up to code. Some is simply adding/relocating heads, but some is that the
original installation company used 1/2" drops for the sprinkler heads. The fire
marshal wants all of them changed. The customer wants to know

I think you are thinking of the Tyco DSB-2 Sprinkler boot which included one
boot, two strap ties, and 1/3 oz. of adhesive. This component is/was found on
Tyco's Dry Sprinkler cuts...at least on the old cutsheets TFP500 and TFP550.
Not sure if it is still available.
