I can get smb_auth to work, but only when i use the -U 10.x.x.x command. It
obviously isnt automatically finding the domain controller. Any ideas why?

I think you need to use the get command...
get proxyauth -
most likely the open command just tries to open the fil
while in the NETLOGON directory

This is a problem.. you have not told smb_auth where Samba is installed.

I missed this before - you changed the domain you test with on
the command line, but didn't change it in your squid.conf.
