Hello Harry,
The reason I mentioned CAD is because I use the ASCII character set for
note and label creation. Knowing the ASCII set, or at least the part that I
find to be the most useful, prevents me from creating geometry for the symbols
that would not be associated with the text. When the t

To prevent further confusion about the degree symbol ( ° ), it will only
work on the keypad, not the numbers across the top of the keyboard above the
letters.
Being a CAD guy myself, I understand how Harry knew the trick, but I had

Royce,
Yep, perfect sense.
I had remembered that the ME threads were 55 degrees, but I didn't know that they
had radius' at the root and crest. Learn something new every day, huh?

The 2 4 8 sequence must be on the numeric keypad to the
right of your alphabet keys (with the number lock "ON", of
course).

Royce,
It depends upon which thread you're using where. When ME/BA is used for
the female (tapped) thread, and Unified 60° for the male, th

As always Harry, you comments are clear and enlightening. So I was OK to start
60° threads as long as I didn't go so deep as to get into the radiused root,
crest issues ? And I have always wondered how some people got a degree (°) key
on their keyboard and I did not. Now if I could just find th

Royce,
I do have some experience in a very narrow area but I don't know
everything by a long shot, and don't want to, but since I've struggled with
this very thing you describe I thought I'd ch

Thanks Harry. While it may not be what I wanted to hear, it DOES sound
correct. Thanks for taking the time to articulate the answer.
Well, Trent, my thinking was that the desired thread was an ME thread, and my
single point tool was a 60 deg and I wasn't sure that ME uses a 60 deg thread
form. i just set the tpi equal and didn't go the full depth so that if the thread
form was not the same, it wouldn't matter. And I also wasn
Royce,
I'm curious why you didn't finish out the thread in the lathe if you already
had it set up and had roughed out the thread.
I'm NOT being a "smarty-pants". I know you had a reason and thought it was
worth hearing.

Hi listers. I just turned an arbor to .1875, pre chased a 40 tpi thread to about
.009 deep (final is about .013), used a 3/16-40 ME die to "clean up" the threads
and the final diameter turned out to be about .175. The die is a split die but had
no "reducing" screw. Just a chamfer on the outer e
