a clock gains / loses 10 seconds
So in 45 days a clock changes by 1080hours x 10 seconds = 10800 seconds
10800 / 60 = 180 minutes
180 / 60 = 3 hours
So on 17th March one clock will read 3 o'clock and the other 9 o'clock
:(
Sorry to disappoint you!

at it, why not embrace
decimalisation and have ... Internet Time!
I for one won't be touching Internet Time with a barge pole, and thankfully
I'll be long gone before there's enough of a difference between GMT and UTC
to warrant its introduction ;-)

Dear All,
You'll have to forgive my ignorance, but what is the difference between GMT
and UT?
In practical terms, isn't 12:00 GMT the same time as 12:00 UT? If so,
what's the point of renaming something we've already got?

I hope this is

knowledge of such things is restricted to playing with
Meccano as a child, so I don't know how easy it is to cut angled teeth for
example, however my Meccano set had cogs with angled teeth so I suppose it
can't be too difficult or expensive!
Let me know what you think.

Alberto,
Yes it is, is the short answer. In fact you will need two shaped gnomons -
one for the spring and one for the autumn. For each gnomon to stay in one
piece, it has to have some notional diameter to which the EoT is added or
subtracted. In the morning one side of the gnomon will cast
it for!

Dear all,
I've reconsidered my previous submission! The sun will not cross from one
hemisphere to the other, but will always be in one or the other. It's
difficult to explain this without pictures, but you probably all saw this
before I did. There is still the slight problem of the two days a
to know!!
I hope I haven't made any blindingly obvious errors in my above analysis -
if I have I'm sure someone will be kind enough to point it out to me ;¬)
Best wishes,

I am a beginner at dialing. Was working in backyard yesterday with wooden
mockup of horizontal dial I'll be making later in metal, and two questions
arose:
1. If the angle of the gnomon is too large (e.g., 42 degrees here at 40
deg
north), will that make the dial fast or
will not
be parallel to your roof. The shadow's distance from the wall will then
vary accordingly.

Dear all,
If I step out into my yard and look up the surface of my roof, does
the altitude in the sky change as I move my eyes from right to center
to left along the roof line into the sky? I think I know the answer to
this, but would like verification.

If you want to try photo-transfer onto brass, perhaps finding a sympathetic

I hope this is helpful and hasn't duplicated too much of what has gone
before.
