Finally I tried to pull new mail and got the password dialog. So the
secure connnection was successful. Error Console had some irrelevant
message from the mail server:

the Calendar Versions page (URL above) shows: For SM 2.33 use
Lightning 3.8b2. There is no need to try other versions with SM 2.33.
Investing your time in error checking would give better results than
installing Add-ons which are binary incompatible to your SM version.

Default mail server...
Empty messages in TRASH (ctrl-f,y), toggle to another app. then
back to SM Mail.
The default mail server name is now underlined, and has focus.
Very minor, but annoying. This did not occur in SM 1.x.
Workaround spotted yet?
