There was a long discussion on the Dutch forum awhile back [1] I tried to convince them not to use landuse=village_green for hedges, plants, flowers etc. in town centers. I believe the consensus was they would still use it for that purpose, especially, since the UK-community also does this [2] So

The tag _leisure=common_ is used quite a lot in African villages where they have a large flat open space, ungrassed. It is used for communal gatherings, football games and markets. If you wish to deprecate the tag then what are you suggesting is the correct tag for this? >From Wiki

Strictly speaking "common land" in England and Wales is a kind of access qualifier, and doesn't imply anything about land use, surface covering or ownership. It's a bit like "public footpath", in that the rights are (to some extent) enshrined in law. So leisure=common would indeed be technically

A large number of landuse=village_green seem to be due to an import in the Czech Republic, where is has been used for essentially any grassy area. Lots of the leisure=common seem to be actually be leisure=park with the exception of the HOT helicopter "landing areas".  I would suggest that maybe
