Joe, I corrected myself in a later post to say WordPad instead of
NotePad. WordPad is indeed where the problem lies.
Chris cgrabowski even sent me his personal sets to try, and they didn't
help either, so guess it's back to the drawing board for this one.

Jart often does this for me too. Sometimes, a file will load and
nothing speaks at all Closing and reopening the file and at least the
text speaks, but, as you say shift+down arrow doesn't speak the selected
text.
