1 yard is only slightly
Here is some info on the ACT grid"The ACT grid is a Transverse Mercator map
projection that uses the
longitude of Mt Stromlo Trig Station as its central meridian. It is
based on the Australian Geodetic Datum 66 (AGD66), which is modified to
take advantage of the ACT’s limited east-west dimension
The Telopea Park references, outside of parentheses, would appear to be grid
points expressed in a Transverse Mercator projection of the Australian National
Spheroid ie very old (yards not metres I suspect) and not much use unless you
know the map and central meridian. The numbers in parenthese
Hi all
I'm still a relative newcomer to OSM (and am still in wonder at the complexity
and enormity of the task!) and have found this discussion quite interesting. I
only use Potlatch as I was advised it was simple, and for beginners, and it
loaded by default in the edit screen. I use an Orego
Hi guys
Here is a list of 200 "Big Things". Have a wander around the site and you
might see lots of other possibilities of POIs as well

Hi guys
Thanks for your tips. I have extended my search to the newbies forum too.
On top of what I've already done this is what I've done tonight.
. I can open both JOSM and Merkaator and the maps open ok - although
without any familiarity of these two - I can see my general area i

Hi all
I've been having trouble in using "view" option in OSM ie I can not see maps
other than in edit mode. Delta Foxtrot asked if I had pinged the tile sites
on OSM.
>From my computer all three sites were "request timed out".
I then tried two internet sites to ping - one had the "timed out"
Thanks for your comments everyone. More reading.
Delta Foxtrot - I access OSM through "GPS traces/see your traces" link then
"edit" (another person uploaded a lot of my tracks before I came to OSM but
put my username in the tag so I could find and "fix", do POIs, road surfaces
etc). It is som
Thanks Ross
As a total newbie to this I was advised to use Potlatch as it was seen to be
the easiest. I understand that JOSM and mercaator(sp?) are more
sophisticated eg do proper roundabouts, but I wanted to graduate first!
Also, I can not load (or view) maps from osm.org for some reason - I
Hi guys
You will see straight away that I am new to this "forum". I would like to
be able to call on assistance here every now and then and possibly to put in
my 2 bob's worth every now and then. I also subscribe to the newbies talk
but think, now, that I would prefer to talk with people who are
