Eep! Formal, is it? I don't think that anyone's ever called anything
I've ever done ‘formal’. What I'm going to talk about is more on the
licen_c_e, open data and community side:

OpenStreetMap is more than just a web mapping platform. It's a
comprehensive, community-maintained map/geodatabase of the world
that you can hack on. Since the last GTALUG talk on OSM over five
years ago, it's grown a lot, and developed a huge community of
mappers, developers and data users. In this talk, we'll discuss the
basics of using OSM, how it survived a major licence change with
only a little drama, and how it succeeds as a community.

… and it's pretty much going to be like that. Or it will be, when I
finish writing it. I'll be stopping for dinner at Mappy Hour tonight,
but heading out early to ensure people have something to think about
tomorrow. (Something other than ‘/that guy who tried to end a GTALUG
talk with a half-hour kazoo solo/’, at any rate.)

Hi Colin,

This is the second time that you have mentioned your unpleasant
experience with GTALug on this list, in the context of the
OpenStreetMap presentation that they have scheduled. I am sincerely
sorry that you had an experience that was so unpleasant.

I expect that I will attend Stewart's presentation tomorrow. This may
seem like I am ignoring Colin's advice to stay away. I will also
keep Colin's description of his experience in mind. I think that both
Stewart and Colin are nice folks, so I do my best to be supportive of
both of them. Also, Stewart has promised a kazoo solo. :-)

Beyond that, discussion of GTALug is probably off-topic, unless there
are specific examples from which we might take lessons for our on-line
and in-person communities.

Best Regards and Happy Mapping,
Richard

2015-05-11 Thread Colin McGregor
Some words of warning regarding GTALug. I was involved with GTALug for
over 15 years, then in December of 2013 members of the GTALug started
a campaign that basically made it clear that I am to be the ongoing
target of abuse. I don't know what rule(s) I broke or what I did, but
essentially all communications I've received from them over the last
1.5 years have been crafted to make it clear I am hated.

Bottom line, stay away from GTALug, they are a bunch of nasty vicious people.
