Here is an interesting short article from NASA looking at Hawaii as an analog to the Mars volcanoes (and pits). It is not directly cave related, however. DirtDoc http://www.nasa.gov/centers/goddard/news/topstory/2007/mars_volcanoes.html

Hello everyone, I know there has been much discussion about the event at Airman's cave last Sunday. I think it may be appropriate to ensure that all of the fact are out in the open. I have Cut and Pasted a report on the event below. This report has been sent to the American Caving Accidents

Unfortunately, this is not the 30th anniversary of the Aggie Speleological Society. That distinction passed us by 4 years ago. The first meeting of ASS occurred in September 1973 and was attended by 55 prospective members; in large part due to the efforts of Alicia Wisener, one of the

Well, it appears that I have been misinformed and incorrect in my understanding of ASS. Texas AM has the Aggie Speleological Society listed as founded in 1977, and having not discussed the history of the grotto to any extent with former members, I assumed this was correct. So, come out and help

But officially, ASS is 30 years old. I can't say when people started caving while attending classes at AM, or who went to AM and ended up caving sometimes in their lives, OR when people first thought that A.S.S. was a sexy acronym and recruiting tool. I do know, however, that Dr. Robert Lyton is

Interesting question as to when a grotto officially becomes a grotto. Is it when the group becomes a self-recognized organization with meetings and a membership. Or when the NSS officially grants it a charter (which in the case of ASS was in 1979). In the olden days it was when the TSA

The ASS had been around for 4 or 5 years when I got to AM in 1976. It was my understanding that Alicia, John Gale, David Finfrock, Bob Bliss, Doug Symank and Phil Jank were some of the organizing members. And Finfrock had already graduated the year before I arrived..in 1975.so I knew who he
