When trying to use aplay to play music you have to make sure that squeezeplay is not connecting to it. If squeezeplay is connected then you will get the "cannot set hw params" message. This probably means that you have already changed the asound.conf to point to the USB DAC. This is what you DON'

The bit rate is not irrelevant, the higher the bitrate (assuming it is well encoded) the fewer people there are who in a blind test can tell MP3 from the uncompressed original. Once you get to 256k there are very few people who can tell the difference (except maybe on very carefully selected bits
