If that were the case then it would be weird, but that's not the case.
Rather, I think your interpretation of the page may be incorrect.
You most certainly can have an album with the same AlbumArtist for all
tracks; I do it all the time. However, if you have different
And this one does work. (Please note the one AlbumArtist being different

problem.
(I still haven't tried the theory though)

A couple things. First, what do you mean by showing up with empty
directories? I understand that to mean an operating system directory
(aka folder) with no files in it. But you say you are browsing by
artists, which doesn't follow the OS's directories -- instead it
follows the SQL database that
Thanks for taking your time to help me.
When I say empty directories I mean that when I browse by Artist on
the SBT, I can see the Artist Hifi and all the albums I've tagged
with Hifi as albumartist. But when I open fx. The Dali Test CD album
- it is empty (this is what I call empty directory -
Okay, I have an idea, but I can't test it because I'm literally a few
thousand km from my SB setup. On compilation albums, if you browse by
artist SBS will normally show you both albums in which that artist is
the only artist, as well as compilation albums on which that artist has
one or more

According to this wiki page this way of tagging is wrong:

I've been working with computers for over 20 ywears.
That can be as much a hinderance as help TBH as it often means running
fancy configs of s/w, networks etc. which consumer gear isn't tested

As for the Mystery of the Disappearing Tags, did you use any other
tag-aware programs? Most programs are benign, but some programs are
pretty agressive about correcting your tags for you. mp3tag is not
one of them -- it does only what you tell it, but it's very powerful,
so if you make a mistake
Well, where do I start? With a bit of embarrassment
I've finally worked out why so many of my directories were empty but in
sayng that, I don't know how. It seems that at some point a whole load
of information has disappeared from the tagged data so that the Artist
information was missing.
OK, putting aside the fact that to access the Touch scanner files I have
to have a good working knowledge of computer systems (which your average
man in the street won't have) here's the latest position.
I attached the external drive directly to my PC and removed the music

This problem only exists for CDs that I've ripped. Other music files

What did you use to rip them? What format was used (FLAC, MP3, ALAC,
WMA)?
Are you certain these are not DRM protected when ripped?

Are you certain these are not DRM protected when ripped? i.e. Often
the default setting in WMP and iTunes is to add DRM to all ripped
CD's.
Touch cannot utilize DRM protected rips.

Have you checked to see if the file/directory ownership and permissions
of the newly ripped files are the same as the existing music?
From a terminal window, the command ls -al (without quote marks) will
show the ownership and permission settings.

Thanks for the input. Not being au fait with ownerships and rights

do I change them if required?

The first thing to check is the ownership permissions of a file that
your Touch has been able to index. Then check the ownership
permissions of the recently added files skipped by the scan.
Using the ls -al command above, you'll get an output that looks
something like this:
[directory]$ ls
Thanks a lot for the explanation. I'll give this a try in the morning
and report back.

Hey, I've got the same problem. When I browse by artist I can see the
artist and the art work of each album but when I open the album it is
empty. I only use flac. I can always see and listen to the songs if I
browse by Album or newest additions... but I really like to browse by
artist.

Apologies - long post.
OK, this is now driving me mad. I've bought a Freecom 1TB drive with
its own power, which is very nice. I copied all my music files to it
then attached it directly to the Touch, added it as a USB device and
everything in the garden was rosy.
Then I got down to adding
Sorry, I don't have an answer for your main problem of the Touch's
built-in server (TinySBS) not finding your new files. It should work,
and none of the info in your post gives me any hints as to why it isn't
for you.
But I did want to mention that you don't need to remove the USB drive

Yes, you probably have the problem described in some way here:

Try browsing using artist or album instead of music folder.

Successfully browsing by folder but not by artists/albums/genres
indicates that your scan did not complete correctly. Check your

Also, unless you are running 7.6.0 beta I think the thread that avr300

I've selected Enable sharing on the Touch but can you enlighten me on
how I access that from my PC? I've tried attaching by FTP and http but
