The stereophile measurements for the SBT suggest it is really very well
engineered. It probably should not be a surprise that it sounds good. I
am gradually coming round to the view that
1 competently designed digital source components are pretty good these
days.

This may sound ignorant, rambling, and even slightly off topic. I'll
make my point, which is about tweaking, eventually. First, I don't even
own the Touch. Second, I've got a couple of Duet receivers, so it's not
even 24/96. Third, Over the past decade, I've been through tweaking
hardware, using
Agree, a well mastered recording can sound very good on even the
cheapest gear. I've heard some 128 kbps mp3 that has sounded better
than some of my 24/96 recordings. However, I've also heard some of my
24/96 sound better on different equipment.

I find it very interesting that some Touch owners are extremely pleased
with its sound quality, but others find it very lacking, and make
extensive modifications to the Touch firmware, hardware, etc. to
improve it.
Why such a dichotomy in the Touch user experience?

Because it's cheap for how it sounds.

My former source was a SB3 with a Lavry DA-10. When I got the Touch a
year and a half ago, I synced and level matched the analog outs of the
Touch against the SB3/Lavry combo.
After two weeks of comparison, I found I couldn't reliably tell the
difference between the two set-ups, so I sold the
I pulled the caps out of my Touch, not because I found anything lacking
in the sound, but because I read a competent and plausible explanation
of what the caps were supposed to do (stop DC from the DAC), what they
really did (not work because the DAC outputs no DC, and instead mess
with the

I think that pretty much nails it.

I very much agree
I have recently bought a Squeezebox Touch with a Linear Power Supply
plus S-Booster, Nordost Red Dawn interconnects and Stirling Audio LS3
5a V2 speakers and the sound lacks nothing compared to my Cyrus CD6SE.

Hi folks. After reading through some of the topic dealing with changing
caps on the analog output of the Touch, I decided to do a comparison
between its D/A and an Apogee Rosetta 200. So after connecting both
the digital and analog, I level matched both as close as I could by
ear.
