Update: I have tried to access the CD/DVD Player through My Computer. And
this also does not allow me to open the drive. No idea what's going on today

drive, it will try to read the CD in case it has an OS on the disk. So it
reads, but not when I want access to it.
What would probably be ideal is a pre-configured solution that could largely

You probably want a much newer kernel than 3.2. Nouveau works better with
newer kernels, so using the latest version of Linux might solve your problems
(also might not, but it's worth a try).

For the Ubuntu desktop option, uninstall 'Unity' packages. Unity is the name
of Ubuntu's desktop.
I haven't used Openbox (yet) but I believe you can remove that by
uninstalling 'Openbox' packages.
Openbox comes with LXDE (it's what LXDE uses by default) or KDE (it's an
alternative to KDE Plasma), and I suppose it might come with some others.

Anyone know how to book directly to console and not have the gdm or lightdm
graphical login load? I tried removing gdm from init.d via:
