Favorite DE is GNOME, KDE is a fairly good alternative (though I haven't used
KDE much), and Cinnamon is decent, but cluttered.
Mint menu is a separate package called "mintmenu" (it's probably available
from wherever you installed MATE). After it's installed you should be able to
add it to your panel like any other panel widget.
As for my favorite desktop - probably Xfce right now, but I enjoyed Gnome 2

I've read that Libreoffice Draw can be used as an alternative to Microsoft
Publisher. It definitely has the capabilities to open and edit Publisher
files anyway. Also Scribus is supposed to be good.
