That's sounds great.
So shred will write random data to the disc and overwrite all old data
(prventing recovery of that data) until the disc is full. :D
Thanks everyone. :D
Two questions:
Is shred shipped with trisquel and also what is the -v argument for?
-v, --verbose
show progress
I want to kno, what mail provider do you guys use and if so why, also are
there any of them that might possibly have a mail server running ontop of
Trisquel as that would be awesome.
All I want is a simple mail provider, that's all, nothing more than mail :D.
Oh okay, thank you.
That command-line argument is damn helpful for that binary; shred.
As compared to using the Disk Utility in Live Session mode for Trisquel, will
the shred utility work while Trisquel is runnign off of an optical disc?
Thanks in advance.
The tool you're talking about was from the Trisquel devs, and it was dropped
in Trisquel 7. You now need to enable Compiz by yourself. The script is
pretty simple, though, so you could copy it from Trisquel 6 to Trisquel 7, or
8 (whatever you upgrade to next), or just read it to understand
I would be very interested in understanding which part of the sentence yeah,
but can it play Crysis 1? do you find to be sarcastic?
Could you be running out of (memory + swap)? In that case it could've been
the oom (out of memory) killer. You should find his calling card in the logs.
As lembas pointed out, it seems to me that you are running out of mem. Check
your mem and swap.
If you don't like it, you can disable the reader thingy by toggling this to
false in about:config- reader.parse-on-load.enabled
There lies no sarcasm inside the sentence itself (may be only in the fact
that Crysis 1 is stone-old and runs fluently on much older systems) but in
the :-P at the end of the sentence =:-o
So I did this, and now I have IceCat 31.7.0 running on a fairly old Trisquel
6 install. Every time I try to use it to go to the Trisquel site, it crashes.
I suspect it's something to do with LibreJS, as when I turn it off, Trisquel
works fine. I had a similar instability issues with IceCat
What's wrong with just using shred? It overwrites the entire drive with random
data, effectively wiping it.
On the other hand, if you want that feeling of cleanness, then dd if=/dev/zero
of=/dev/drive does the trick.
These two are by far the simplest and most effective solutions to my knowledge.
sudo shred -v /dev/sdX
Great note, jxself.
Added to that, patent clause in Canonical's current policy needs to be bit
more polished. Canonical should adopt defensive use of patents; not to
initiate litigation suits against (re)distributors for minor/trivial
violations.
Further, Canonical's trademark policy
Simply grab the ISO and see yourself. I for one did experience horribly
slowdowns in the three various maps I tried with two bots.
The original Xonotic scales very well and is know to work well on older
systems. The ChaosEsque mod seems a lot different here to me. It adds lots of
new models
Truebut as you pointed out nearly all GPU-solutions under GNU/Linux have
their issues. Especially when you consider that even newer Intel GPUs will
rely on closed-source firmware which is a big No No for free software.
So what remains in the end ?
Only using older systems ?

I've been using Trisquel 6 for a couple of years, and I just installed
Trisquel 7 on a separate partition to try it out before deciding whether to

Both fsf.org and mozilla.org work for me without problems with Abrowser 39.0.
Are you using any add-ons that might cause problems?
After I posted that info, I had a hunch. I had saved the copy of the password
file in the same grub.d folder, with -backup appended to the end of the
filename. This time, I copied it to a different folder, with backup- at the
start of the filename, and deleted the first backup. Then I
It also works like shit in my system.
I think it is a general problem. It happens when the browser blocks specific
sites.
It is bug and an important one. I'm going to report it.
I like the Reader View. Just note that if you have NoScript, you will have to
allow scripts from about:reader.

Welcome Sam!
Inconveniences sometimes happen, but we do our best to find workarounds or
report bugs, which often fix the problems :)
Hi all.
From the Acorn Electron and BBC Basic, through the limbo of beige boxes
running Windows, then Apple before the fascism became too ugly to bear...and
now to Ubuntu and my little Acer, it's been quite a journey. Now looking to
move to the world of free software. I'm new to this and I

Welcome freedom seeker! The amount of trouble has to do with the hardware you
have. However there are easy and well functioning while still free options
available.

Thanks guys. To me these issues are inconvenient, but in the great scheme of
things probably not. I understand RMS's Leemote had no suspend/hibernate
function, but he seemed to manage OK. He seems to use his Laptop as no more
than an email tool. At least it's a free tool!

No. Really no sarcasm was intended..
I was just joking on the well known fact that the first Crysis (2007) was and
is so heavy (and graphically beautiful) that on ultra settings even recent
and good computers show some stuttering!
I played that game on my laptop from 2010 (medium/hugh gpu)
Same strange behaviour after update.
So I'm using IceCat as long as necessary.

Welcome to freedom. :-)
There are also two command-line utilities for erasing disks in a default
Trisquel repo. These are wipe and nwipe.
Well, you are lucky your wifi card is working (many people had to buy a USB
dongle).
And if you were to play games with 3D and such, you would find that ATI are
useless in the free world.
Now I agree with what you said about the FSF. They seem to do SOME good, but
I don't see them doing
Yes. Give show the people free software, and praise it's virtues, but give
them a system to run it on that works as well as or better than the non free
devices and software they're currently using.
In our rapidly building surveillance society where more liberty is eroded
daily, I can see the

so shred -n 1 -z -v /dev/sda will probably take like 4 hours
Hey Sam,
Trisquel is a great free distro. It should be able to do just about everything
you want out of the box.
The only real trouble you may have is if you want to run a particular piece of
hardware that no one has written a free driver for yet. (Like a Wi-Fi card in
many laptops) . If you
For me, updating the kernel got rid of the brightness issues.
You can update your kernel to the most recent version using jxself's
repository. The Trisquel wiki walks through the process here.
Updating the kernel might solve some of the issues:

Can you describe the issues that you had with these things?
For brightness... is the problem that there are special keys or buttons that
don't work for these functions, or is the problem that it shows that you are
adjusting the brightness but it is not actually changing? If it is just a
Hi all.
I won't beat around the bush. I'm using Ubuntu 14.04 on an Acer Aspire
V5-122P, and once I wiped Windows, out of the box Ubuntu works. Wifi,
brightness, suspend/hibernate, the lot. It's great. Even getting this far
from where I've come from was a learning experience.
However...I'm
I ran the game it doesnt' run that bad. Are there any multiplayer servers?
I have tried Trisquel 7 in a full installation, and this is the only Free
distro that works with my wifi card. I will still have issues with
brightness, and suspend/hibernate. These don't work at all except in Ubuntu.
I went back to Ubuntu because of these issues, but doing so makes me feel
Sorrythen I simply misunderstood youmy bad !
My Gaming Box runs all version of Crysis fine in 1080p (with M$ CrapOS :-)
The main thing beside some more documentation which really is a show stopper
to the mod IMO is the performance penalty compared to vanilla Xonotic.
Have a nice
I had those issues until updated my kernel. Im using 4.1.1 kernel to fix my
