I like Dave's idea too. Does your university library lend laptops? If so,
perhaps you can use a university laptop to show her how the live-usb works.
She may appreciate you showing her how it works before giving it a go
herself.
I think that someone here will be able to help. I'm just here to nit-pick:
Linux is one of many programs that make up our system. It's misleading (and
gives undue credit) to call the whole system Linux.
This community cares about software freedom, as the GNU Project set out in
1983. All
I live in Toronto. It's a big city; I think that there should be groups
already organized here. I will try and find out on the Internet, and by
asking at university faculty offices here.
If anyone knows of a group in Toronto, could you let me know? I'm also open
to starting something,
What would you like to change about it? Maybe people can make suggestions
based on the features you're looking for.
I use a program called Synapse to launch applications. You might like it
more than the start menu:

Oh wow, I was looking for a laptop with a high res screen, and settled for
the Gentoo a month ago =(. This hurts a little more than the Ogg Player v2
coming out right after I bought the original Ogg Player.
It's a great looking computer!
This new one is called the King Penguin (bottom left)
Thanks for the reply Chris. I did inquire!

Thanks for the recommendations. I've been looking to try a new music player
I took my first steps away form proprietary software, with open source
Ubuntu, back in highschool. I was just looking for a new experience then.
It was like trying to ride my bike further from home than I had been before,
or exploring a part of town that I hadn't been to before. Nothing
I found myself in this situaiton --looking for a laptop-- a few weeks ago.
Buying a computer with proprietary software --new or used-- supports people
involved in that business model. It's money that could support businesses
that are friendlier to our community.
We have to research so
That's one reason. If free-hardware distributors disappear or scale back
their offerings, for lack of demand, the non-free ones will have a bigger
share of the market. Curtosey of our community.
Also, as Chris said, others will see you using the hardware. People may take
that as an
I support re-use/recycling as well. Our posts here pit environmentalism
against civil liberties. This frames the issue in a strange way:
It suggests that our tiny community of free-software users could abandon
their cause --civil liberties-- to contribute to the environment's well
being.
I'm looking for a program that can handle various formats. But any of .txt,
.pdf, and .odt would be great.
I made a typo in the topic title. I meant aloud.
Orca works well, thanks guys. I slowed down the speech rate to make the
computer's voice sound a little more natural.
My dad needs Flashplayer at home, for work. Help?
My dad uses LogMeIn for work. Their URL is .
I was really into 2pac in highschool. I remember hearing him say this:
“I know what good morals are, but you're supposed to disregard good morals
when you're living in a crazy, bad world. If you're in hell, how can you live
like an angel?
Denying a desperate person help for his own good is paternalistic. It also
looks a little bad ... like we're capitalizing on his weak position to
deliver our political message. I agree with quantamgravity; refusing help is
not being a good neighbour.
Helping the person is good, if we
Thanks Magic Banana. Is there a reason you recommended the Galaxy S2 over
the other Replicant-compatible phones?
I stopped by the phone store today to ask them about the S2, and I like it.
It feels great when everything just works. Non-GNU people take that for
granted! Well, except for the planned-obsolescence and feature-tiering.
Are there any free software phones? Are there any that I can use to access
my email, and play music?
I found the Neo FreeRunner on the FSF site. Wikipedia says this phone was
released in 2008, and so may be sort of dated now. Does anyone have any
experience with it?
I don't have a userpic for my Trisquel OS account right now. Can I add a
pic?
Is Midori free software? I see that it uses the LGPL and not the GPL. What
does that mean, in terms of it being free?
I see, thanks!
It's good that a lot of the important things work :)
I like Abrowser, but I was having some trouble connecting to the public
library's wifi with it today. Sometimes trying a different browser does the
trick. Any recommendations?
Thanks for the article, I'll check this out
Thanks guys. Armworm, I don't have a specific issue; I was just wondering
because I noticed that some systems don't include an mp3 player by default.
I posted that I sometimes choose convenience over principle. Quiliro asked
me to clarify which principles. I meant that I sometimes choose convenience
over the free-software principles.
I personally find the ideology of the GNU project very inspiring and
uplifting. That's why I'm here.
It's convenient to trust others and accept a division of labour.
I don't always choose principle over convenience. Am I not really a part of
the free software community?
It's good that ideologies exist, so that we have frames of reference for
talking to eachother.
But I think that
Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?
It's great when authors allow the public to review their work. This step
supports the community's confidence that his program is safe. If a small
fraction of users look at the code once in a while, that adds to the
community's confidence in the program.
I
Cool, thanks for the information guys.
lol
Thanks for putting me in touch with Chris, MB and miga. I ended up ordering
a Gentoo Notebook. I'll post my thoughts and a few photos when it arrives.
I think GNOME3 starts up using about 600MB of RAM, and LXDE starts up using
about 200MB.
I guess that GNOME3 is a little more taxing on the processor, and maybe other
parts, than LXDE is, as well.
Could this make a noticeable difference in battery life, for notebook
computers?
Here are some photos of ThinkPenguin's computers, Usbetti:

Thanks guys, I will send Chris a message.
