It’s fine now. Install from scratch, don’t upgrade. Lesson learned.
I’m trying a full re-install.
When I try to launch System—>Preferences—>Look and Feel—>Windows , I
get the attached error.
Thanks so much for the input. I ended up reaching out to Minifree who set up
the laptop and asked them. I was too afraid of doing flashrom related things,
so instead they gave me a solution that involved symbolic-linking vmlinuz and
initrd.img to the updated kernel version files in /boot.
Good call! Best practices absorbed.
Yes, please everyone, please prefix my previously mentioned steps with this
first step (change directory to root of boot volume):
$ cd /
Guys, good news. Leah gave me a super simple solution to get the kernel
updated. It's ok to use linux-libre for the updated kernels, but then:
ariella@/ $ sudo rm vmlinuz initrd.img
ariella@/ $ sudo ln -s /boot/vmlinuz-4.14.13-gnu vmlinuz
ariella@/ $ sudo ln -s /boot/initrd.img-4.14.1
I doubt that. What you haven't seen is the other 6 or so other 3.x versions I
had accumulated via Software Updater, that autoremove wouldn't touch. I did a
cleanup using apt purge commands.
I don't allow any real-time access to me on my personal devices. So, no work
email, no work chat, not text messaging, and I don't take calls from work
related numbers.
When I happen to telecommute unexpectedly, which means I don't have my work
laptop with me, I'll tolerate real-time access
I'm using 64-bit. :)
Thank you MB and Banana. That would explain it. I might have to reach out to
Minifree then. :)
Thanks for the help.
Linux-libre is what I'm attempting to use, and if you read all my posts
you'll see that I have already followed all the steps in the documentation
including the aliasing of grub.cfg to libreboot_grub.cfg for libreboot.
Autoremove has not been removing them. Tried that many times. :)
The fail hilarity continues.
I did: sudo apt-get upgrade, and many packages got upgraded.
Next time I ran the Trisquel Software Update, it offered to update
linux-libre kernel to 4.14 lol. (Hasn't done this before, not even when I
installed the linux-libre-lts myself at the command line.) I
My boot menu does not offer any "advanced options". Is there a hotkey to
press? See attached.
Figured out how to do removals:
sudo apt-get purge linux-image-3.13.0-xxx-lowlatency
TEST: Grub.cfg after copying it to ~/ first and chmod to 777, and then
gzipping because of the forum's extension restrictions.
I don't know anything about grub boot menus beyond pressing enter to make it
boot faster than the auto timer. I'll have to do some learning.
I can't attach my grub.cfg. I get "validation error."
Thanks for hopping in to help! :)
Kernel removals:
How do I do them one at a time? They were installed via the Software Updater.
Is there a history in there I can uninstall with, or do I have to do some
sudo apt-get remove? If so, what do I type?
4.14 kernel in /boot:
Yup! It's there. Using
grub /boot
config file:
===
ariella@~ $ sudo cat /boot/grub/grub.cfg | grep menuentry_id_option
menuentry_id_option="--id"
menuentry_id_option=""
export menuentry_id_option
menuentry 'Trisquel GNU/Linux' --class trisquel --class gnu-linux --class gnu
--class os
I'm supposed to delete previous kernels after software update installs new
ones? Why doesn't it prune this itself?

Here's the contents of /etc/default/grub:
ariella@/boot/grub $ more /etc/default/grub
# If you change this file, run 'update-grub' afterwards to upd
ariella@/boot/grub $ sudo update-grub

I've also done the grub.cfg linking for libreboot. See attached.
Lucky! I installed that same package and mine hasn't switched to the 4.14.
It's staying with 3.13 for some reason.
Found a discussion. Learning...
https://trisquel.info/es/forum/how-boot-new-linux-libre-kernel-libreboot
I followed all the steps on that page to install linux-libre-lts, in hopes of
getting version 4.9 as listed, but after I did every step and rebooted, uname
-r still says 3.13. Not sure what to do next.
Thanks! I'll look into it.
It's been 6 months and I've still rocking a Minifree Libreboot T400. I've
been doing corporate work with it recently (Office 365, LibreOffice, emacs).
I still have to cheat with an iPad for some things like Webex and Microsoft

That's a great first step.

Ubuntu users of the 64-bit x86 architecture (aka, amd64) can expect updated
kernels by the original January 9, 2018 coordinated release date, and sooner
if possible. Updates will be available for:
Good thinking! Thanks! That's what I'll look for.
Oh! But according to:

How does one change to the US repos?

I won't be able to help with installation and configuration. I use basic
emacs and have no experience extending it. :
I ran system update tonight and got an unauthenticated sources error, so I
went to bash and did: sudo apt-get upgrade and got tons of "Failed to fetch"

Oh wow you've got Gnome all prettified. I have much to learn in this. :) I'm
using default theme plus the purple background so far.
Congrats on the great new lappy! Another happy family member. I have
difficulty leaving mine alone now. I've got so many workflows figured out
like rsync over
Update on the wifi: I was sent a replacement wifi card, which I installed
tonight. Problem solved! The speeds are where they should be now.
Update on battery: I was also sent a replacement battery that looks like it
will last more than 4 hours in my initial test, as I write this. :) It's

Thanks for the shipment!
Just wanted to give an update and a bit of thanks to Leah for always
responding energetically to any hiccups I've had. We've remained in touch and
she's sending me a replacement battery and wifi card so that my setup is the
best it can be. It's been great having a personal touch like this.
I can't confirm that that is true because the sound works fine on my Minifree
T400 received recently, even after all current updates.
I had a Surface RT and rather liked it. It was nice to use with Windows 8.
After about 3 years I gave it to my nephew who uses it for homework, drawing
etc.
Crazy glued everything back together. Crack sealed, accident resolved lol.
I had to install xinput first, but it works like in Mint. Touchpad adjusted.
:)
After I installed all software updates (first time since receiving the
laptop), the right-edge scroll touch zone is working too. Awesome!
Sounds good. I'll try what you send and see how it goes. I'd love to be able
to get up to at least 3 hours. My usage will be writing while doing some web
research and email.
That's so very thoughtful. I'll be super careful but I wouldn't want to
trouble you with fixing any of my potential future physical mistakes. :) The
ThinkPenguin device is working really well and is my backup plan should
things not go well. Thanks for all the help.
I've noticed it's touchier than other trackpads I've used even with all the
sliders moved to the left in the System Prefs speed settings. I'm tempted to
try something that I had to do on my tower with a high sensitivity mouse. The
steps are something like:

Ooof, very technical. I can try to see what I have and know more about what
behaviours to expect. Thanks!
I know right? I could have been saved with that this morning. :) I feel so
silly.
Also, I click my way to standbye, via Launcher--Power Off--Suspend, it won't
wake back up no matter what I try. Keys, mouse, open close lid, pressing
power button, nothing. I have to hold the power button down for several
seconds to force shut down and reboot.
I'm also noticing that closing the lid of the T400 doesn't put it into
standby, but powers it off completely. In System Settings I have it set to
"suspend" but it's powering off. (This was before I damaged it LOL.) Any
ideas?
I am such a clumsy idiot. My foot caught the power cord this morning and
pulled the laptop off my coffee table. It hit the floor on the edge of the
screen and now the frame around the display has a crack in the top right.
Sigh. Need to buy some plastics glue to repair it.
That's the spec of the chips yeah. I seem to only be getting 2 Mbps according
to http://speedof.me/ . The USB dongle is giving 30 Mbps.
I've played with my router all that I know how to: changing to either B, G or
N only modes, mixed modes, channel width frequency set to 20mhz instead of
auto, tried different channels and the results are all the same with the
internal wifi. Throughout those I gave the TP USB dongle speed test
That's great, thanks!
Aw, that's very thoughtful. Let's not act on the wifi just yet. I want to try
a few more things. As for the battery, there is a more urgent need for that
and I appreciate the help. :)
Minifree T400 Review! If pressed for time, scroll down to SUMMARY for bullet
points.
I've received the basic config model of Minifree's T400 laptop today and
wanted to share some experience on the ordering, receipt, out of box, initial
setup, and performance testing.
First some info on me
Good to know! Thanks. I'm ok. I just don't enjoy banks and their fees as a
rule. :) Very much looking forward to the shipping notification! Excited!
Ordered and bank transfer initiated. It wasn't fun. Bank took forever to
complete the task, and I argued with them over the ridiculous $30 service
fee. I lost. :( Anyway, after exchange rates and the fee the T400 is costing
me $400 CAD. Not quite what I had hoped for, but it will be worth it.
For sure. Shared the link with colleagues.
This is great news! Saving up for a purchase! :)
