I mentioned before that I think the Trisquel forum software could be
improved. I have had a look around for some free software that could be used
to replace it.
I found an absolutely gorgeous forum software! I am so happy to tell you
about it! It called SMF - Simple Machines Forum.
I hate to rain on your enthusiasm...
Haha! Don't worry about that!
the mailing lists and forums are a huge deal. I don't think it is totally
appropriate for someone who is relatively new and has not contributed a lot
to work on such a large project for the community.
Excellent point!
There is a great review of various nvidia cards, including the 9500gt,
comparing their performance on a variety of games and benchmarks using both
the latest nvidia binary blob and the latest nouveau drivers here:

The reasoning behind putting the Unity launcher on the side is that vertical
screen real estate is at a premium in modern displays, which are much wider
than longer. It seems logical to me, therefore, to put the launcher on the
side and I have got used to it there without much effort.
Great link, lembas! Thanks :)
There was very nice information in the article about companies endorsed by
the FSF that support free software.
Thanks for looking into this, Chris, and for your suggestion about the B940.
I think Intel must have been updating/correcting their database for the
information about their chips on the Intel webpage this past couple of days.
I have been making enquiries, too and details on the webpage have
Is an Intel CPU with the absolutely appaling TXT technology on its own
impotent? Does it require support from the chipset/motherboard to actually
function? Are there many motherboards/chipsets that allow you to turn off the
functionality of the TXT hardware?
Chris, I was chatting with somebody at #fsf, and they said to totally avoid
Intel, due to their integrating DRM into their CPUs and other freedom hostile
things...
He said go with AMD and use Nouveau drivers for an nVidia car. His other
option was not getting a new computer at all and
Wow! Thanks dimqua!
I had written to Intel to confirm this information before you posted this
note, but I hadn't received a reply back by then.
I got my information from Wikipedia, as well as looking at the Intel website.
I should have spent more time on the Intel website!
I appreciate
I am certainly not a fan of Apple, though I got an i-phone quite a while
back. I was very impressed by its Google maps function, at the time. I liked
being able to go online with it and search the internet, without having to
have a laptop with me. The one feature I liked about i-tunes is
It is hard to know what to go with.
nVidia regularly release great working Linux drivers, but they are
proprietary and closed source, I believe. The drivers work well with many 3D
games. nVidia really do not try and support free software as a company, for
some reason, so people say. (Linus
I go to the website here:

Clicking on the install button starts a download of an archived package to my

I think Rick Hodgin's suggestion is a good one. From the next release,
Trisquel should be called Trisquel 12.04 LTS / Codename. It would help people
who are unfamiliar with Trisquel but know its more famous Ubuntu sibling.
I don't know the difference between Gnome 2, Gnome 3 and Gnome shell, or
Mate. I am familiar with Unity, on Ubuntu 12.04. A lot of work went into it.
I think we should stick with what is released in Ubuntu and reap the benefit
of all the development work that goes on there.
Unity is fine
I would like to use the latest version of Lightspark, so tried to put the ppa

Do I have to be in a special mode, like advanced to see it?
Open-pc.com look like they put together computers that will support free
software, like Trisquel.
Here is there url:

But are there any machines that work with a free bios?! I know Richard

I asked in the coreboot irc channel and they didn't seem to know of one
there...

I added Backup to Accessories in my menu launcher, so that I could easily
launch Deja Dup.
I click on Backup and Deja Dup gives me an error message: Backup Failed.

This is the first time I have tried to use Deja Dup on this system.

I am amazed what governments want to get away with. They really want to
control their people!
Does Ctr-Alt-T result in a real or virtual terminal? It is the first I have
heard of it.
When does it make a difference? (I guess a real one doesn't rely on the x
server, or something like that.)
Lightspark! It is a free software project that can run later implementations
of flash. The very latest release, just a few days ago, allows you to watch
flash on the BBC website. I think there is something called Adobe Air,
something like that, which the latest version supports too.
Thanks, baptistredbloom!
I went into default applications. (I had been there before.) I couldn't see

There was no sign of Network proxy anywhere. I couldn't see a way of adding

Thank you, Horgeon.
Why do we actually need Hurd? It is a kernel, isn't it? Why don't we just use
the Linux-libre kernel, instead?
The only application I have running is Abrowser. I have quite a few tabs

For some reason, from time to time, the desktop just freezes. I can move my

This option is meant to be available in Ubuntu, but I can't see it in
Trisquel 5.5.
How do I get to it/set it up?
Thank you!
I left a parsing error in /etc/sudoers
Now I can't use sudo, as there is no valid sudoers file. I have gone into
recovery mode but I need to drop to root shell prompt. I don't have a su

Thank you!
I have moved the volume slider on the youtube control, and also the volume
slider in the bottom right of the desktop. I still don't hear things very
loudly.
Is there another setting that needs to be adjusted?
Thank you!
Thanks, baptistedbloom - that has helped. Is there anything else I can do to
pump up the volume?
The speakers are internal, on a laptop.
Thanks, Magic Banana.
I tried that sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt and got an error message:

By the way, for some reason when I tried booting from a live CD on a usb

Previously, when I tried out Trisquel
I will give GNU/Hurd a whirl.
How far along into development is it?
It isn't so famous as Linux. Why aren't more developers working on it?
Thanks, Chris.
I have gone to the Tor website here to add the repository:
https://www.torproject.org/docs/debian.html.en
I have tried to check which version of Ubuntu I have, with lsb_release -c

Brigantia is not listed on the Tor page.

I think I have isolated the problem.
Mobile broadband is with one ISP. Wireless is with a different ISP.
The wireless ISP blocks IRC. It also blocks popular VPN providers like
hotspot shield.
I will contact my VPN provider and see if I can get it set up in Trisquel.
Then I might be able
I created a 96x96 png image and saved it in ~/.face. I had to replace the

Maybe I can solve this by trying to reach freenode by webchat.
How would I reach freenode #trisquel by doing webchat in Abrowser? (ChatZilla

I will try and check with IT about whether port 6667 is firewalled.
Incidentally,
Thank you, Magic banana!
How can I check which ports are open on this wireless connection?
I can do a webchat on freenode using chrome and this url:

I think this does not permit you to be cloaked, though. I don't know if
webchat works in Abrowser on Trisquel - i will try it later.
Which ones do you suggest using?
Why do you like them?
Thank you!
In Trisquel 5.5 a photo is taken during installation, if you like, and used
for the login screen.
I didn't set that up at the time, but would like to use a custom image on the
login screen. How do I set that up?

I have some PGP files I would like to decrypt.
I have the required keys in Seahorse.
I try and open the files in Gedit and Geany but there seems to be no option
there for decrypting.
What do I need to do?
Thank you!
I don't know if it is normal to have only one lead developer. Perhaps it is.
A bit of single mindedness is a good thing sometimes, I think. But to have
the whole Trisquel OS reliant on a single developer is a bit precarious and
can't be a good thing.
How many other developers are actively
There are meant to be very large numbers of developers working on Ubuntu. How
much is Trisquel able to benefit from that? What are the developers that work
specifically on Trisquel generally trying to do most of the time?
By the way, gNewSense is also a Linux-libre Ubuntu based distro. What
This forum runs on pretty basic code. Isn't there something a bit more
sophisticated that we could use, to allow more functionality?
I heard that Office Libre is better, but I don't know why.
Office libre comes by default with Trisquel.
For example, login using OpenID. Being able to have a signature. Smileys.
Buttons to click on to add an html link. That sort of stuff. It is all
available on the Ubuntu forums application.
Battlefield 3 is not open source, neither is it free. But it is an amazing
product that really puts to work the most advanced graphics cards out there.
A lot of work went into making it that way. That took a lot of effort time
and sweat and tears. I cannot see how such an advanced computer
I contacted Intel about supporting a free and open source BIOS. Here is there
reply:
Thank you for your email.
Writing BIOS code is not like writing an OS device driver. Chipset
specifications can vary not just between chipset models, but between
steppings of the same chipset. Problems
It'll fail. I guarantee it. Any serious use of flash media will cause it to
fail
Does this mean that you are not a fan of solid state hard drives, Chris?
Which is a good place in the UK to get a laptop that supports linux-libre?
Also, it would be good if it supported a free and open BIOS, too.
Novatech in the UK are a good value shop with good support. They sell a lot
of Laptops manufactured by Clevo:
