In Control Center, there's a tool for that – Déjà Dup. If your home folder is not big or you don't need incremental backups, do it manually. Sometimes I compress files and folders using tar and save them in a network drive. I give the tarballs names according to the date and content eg.

The GNU dd command line you posted is right (that is: "of=" must target the whole device because the disk image file was made in such way to be used in that place). The "destroyed partition" is expected, it's only understood during boot. Try booting the "destroyed partition", it should work. --

There's an initial lag when I grab the edge of a window and try to resize it byt dragging. The mouse cursor goes ahead and the window follows later. On a second attemt it resizes immediately. I'm on Gnome Fallback.

Solved ? I ran Software-updater and got Linux-Libre 3.13.0-678lowlatency, etc. Now the startup is much faster and there is but one password request. The syslog for the startup is very short indeed. Thanks to the developers for solving this one !

One question: did you change the display manager from lightdm to gdm or others? If that is so I might have the solution to your problem. Do not uninstall anything, I might have a better solution if the answer is affirmative.
