Loose control in what sense? My understanding is that the nabble service
will just archive the mailling list, and preset it in a forum alike

not something new. It's just a front-end to twsocket@elists.org. It even
doesn't use accounts from mail list - user must register separately.

There are mail readers available capable to sort mails by threads
AFAIK.
Do you mean people actually use email readers that don't sort by subjects
and replies?

Sure, I am such an example, I still use OE (old fashioned, got
socialized with it :)
AFAIK Windows Live suite has a mail reader (newer OE) in it for free.

I just found a nice thing at http://www.nabble.com/. It provides forum-like
interface based on the mailing list. I find it much more useful than mail
archives especially if you want to read complete conversation. Would be awesome
if ICS list is accessible via this site.
