silly pc's. this new one requires passwords for telnet to work & since
this is my (repeat MY) pc I've never required passwords. Past 4 pc's
never had passwords, may have be upgrades from 9.x versions of universe
oh well now to move the data

Fyi,
I installed At&t's dialup accelerator last week and it also knocked out
telnet. All Universe services now start but now I'm receiving rpc error
80011, So I'm guessing there may still be some conflict
