But then I need to research which HP is equivalent to the LB3000 and has
a native Ubuntu driver and is about the same cost

The Canon LBP 3000 is listed as having limited functionality in Linux (see
Linuxprinting.org).
I have 3 Hewlett Packard printers and all of them are fully functional in
Ubuntu.
