Just wanted to thank everyone again for their help and let you know
the results.
Someone sent me a CD with Ubuntu-eee on it and instructions on how to
install using a USB stick. My stick gave error messages, and I didn't
have another one, so I used the same instructions to install using an
SD card

That's what we're here for! :-)
One of the great things that attracted me to Ubuntu in the first place
was the strong sense of helpfulness and courtesy in the user community.
Ubuntu is a major force in helping to break the old ster

No, I'm on an old and slow broadband plan. Contemplating upgrading to
a faster plan now that price/quotas are improving.

Re installation of the customised hardy edition for the eeepc:
I have been successful today in installing it via a USB device onto a 701
eeepc today and in order to spare some pain to those who would also like to
"jump off the deep end" and try this, I have prepared a brief HowTo.
Would someone p

Yes, and I do often d/l at night. But the gremlins have a nasty habit
of disrupting the d/l in various creative ways, so I leave it
unattended only as a last resort.
At least I no longer have a cat to sneak into the room when I'm not
looking and curl up on the nice warm keys of the laptop and

I'm in Airlie Beach, Qld. But on Thursday I'm flying to Canberra for a
week, so I won't need the USB key until I get back. And yes indeed I
would certainly return your key to you! Very generous of you to offer
to share it.
One of these years I may get a faster connection, too. That would be
nice.
Hi Jean
Where are you? I have ubuntu-eee on a USB key. I could send it to you,
but I would need the USB key back!

I'm surprised they didn't decide to call it "Hardeee"...
If I hadn't just been made redundant, I'd buy an EeePC for this. I might
try it in virtualisation or on live USB on my normal computer.

Still doesn't solve the 5+ hour d/l time, but it's a step in the right
direction. :-)

Who is your ISP? They may have a copy of HH available on their servers so
this shouldn't count towards your download limits. :)

Any chance of someone in Australia providing this on USB stick or SD
card or something? A download of that size r
a bit +1 to ubuntu-eee from me too... much snappier than the xandros?
that ships with the eee also

It is a great build, I must admit, but there are still a few clear eeepc
bugs that weren't fixed in the release (at least for my unit). Yes, I'm
looking at you, fail-to-power-off bug.
I used to run KDE with a million eeepc fixes, but this release covers the
major ones without fiddling around. It [
Wow. that looks really nice.
I almost want an eeepc just to have it.
