I resolved my problem with the rt61 driver by switching to the 386
kernel and the system is rock-solid again. As the 386 Kernel isn't
build with CONFIG_SMP this is just a work-around for people using old
cpu's wich don't need the SMP feature. Of course this is not a solution

This is weird. I would expect -- if you are running framebuffer and your
card supports at least 1024x768 -- that 'vga=792' would do the trick
(BTW, this is 1024x768, 16M colours). And the dmesg output you show does
not show a framebuffer device in use -- the console is a standard 24x80.

yes, I've found that my problem is actually the kernel, 2.6.20 doesn't
play well with ACPI on quite a few systems, it shows it's head when I
modprobe battery,ac and thermal with longer than usual pauses, and then

For me this fix is a bigger problem than the previous problem. I have a Raid 5
mounted in /media/other , with 4 partitions - /dev/hda12 (IDE), /dev/sda1,
/dev/sdb1 and /dev/sdc11. Before this patch it would fail because md0 would
appear after /dev/sd* but before /dev/hd*; the sleep 10
Correction: alt-sysreq-E lets me resume booting a recovery boot. Inside
it,a cat /proc/partitions does show sd* followed by dm-0, then hda*,
then dm-[1-9].
