The proposed changes worked on my babbage board in that the resulting
libc6 and libc6-vfp packages would still work as before, I could run and
reboot the system just fine.
LD_HWCAP_MASK=0x1040 ldconfig passes (NEON + VFP), but doesn't change
anything as obviously I don't have NEON libs.

Mine wireless is cripled too.
I had normal speed with my laptop's wireless card in Intrepid but since I
installed Jaunty beta I have poor speed. It jumps, stops then for few secs is
normal and the all over again. As I said, no such issue with ath5k in Interpid
nor from some others (Live)

Yup. Can confirm this. It's sluggish on my Dell M1330 intel965. I also
enabled UXA. Intrepid was really good. EXA is really slow whereas UXA is
okayish but give weird effects with compiz light slow fading out.

example. The LFE seems to be muted.

I'd given up hope for a fix after the recent Jaunty discussion. Your
solution works beautifully -- compiz runs perhaps more smoothly / quickly
than before, to answer Daniël's question. (But it's been four months since
compiz ran on this machine so I can't be sure.)
