My conclusion, amazingly, is that it's the Xmodmap that messes things
up. If I do the exec before ever getting there, the panels stay on one
monitor as they should.
However, since the fglrx 8-2 release it seems that I don't need Xgl
anymore. Unbelievably I seem to be able to run compiz and
OK, with the stock Xgl-session, my ~/.xsession-errors says:

Yeah, this problem really annoyed me too. It turns out to be a symptom
of the way Gutsy starts Xgl. A hack workaround is to replace /usr/share
/xserver-xgl/Xgl-session with the old recommended way of starting Xgl:

This syslog shows the suspend as well as the resume. It's worth noting
that e1000 never comes back automatically for me (whether docked or
undocked). I always have to do a rmmod e1000; modprobe e1000 after
resume is complete.

Nautilus will allow me to specify a samba share such as
smb://server/share as a location in which to search, but then it just
ignores that and searches my home directory.

I copied a folder from a samba share today. I saw typical numbers like
Copying 647 of 317. If it's not going to count all the files, it
shouldn't pretend to :)

There can be no doubt that this is not a fluke. My previous
installation of feisty on this machine (evolved by upgrading from feisty
beta) did not exhibit this problem.
