After the screen dims, the keyboard number and caps lock lights blink
off and on, and this message repeats:
atkbd.c: Spurious ACK on isa0060/serio0. Some program may be trying to
access the hardware directly.
Scary, huh.

OK - for some reason, nv can recognize my screen a lot better now than when I
upgraded to herd 5. WIth the sync lines HASHED I get lots of resolutions (plus
the undesireable virtual screen size of 1280x1024)
In System - Preferences - Screen Resolution with NO sync values, my choices
are these:
I got the sync values (shown below) from the gateway online support site
here (also take a look at the preset timings section):
http://support.gateway.com/s//MONITOR/7002356/7002356nv.shtml
from xorg.conf:
Section Device
Identifier nVidia Corporation NV6 [Vanta/Vanta LT]
dmesg | less and a search for CD returns No Pattern Found Also I
confirmed that this bug also occurs on another computer of the same type

Ok, I see what you mean. Should I run the nv driver again (with the sync
values hashed out, and this time save a copy of /var/log/Xorg.0.log
somewhere before I switch back) or is the above /var/log/Xorg.0.log with
proper detection (uses the nv driver) sufficient?

This workaround doesn't work for me. French language is said to be

Ok, I hashed out the sync lines and changed to nv, but for some reason,
it worked this time (doing the exact same thing yesterday gave me

the one error I do see is that nv guesses that the vert sync range is
50-160 when it is actually 50-120 according to gateway. That makes it
try to use resolutions that are too high I think, like 1280x1024.

I'm fairly certain this is a duplicate of some other bug - other people
seem to be compianing, but it seems to affect some cd drves more than
others.
I get this when I try to mount /dev/sdb
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb,
missing codepage or other error
yes - the install borked my hsync and vsync. I had to manually
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg to change nv to nvidia, and plug in the
correct sync values.

Running sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg (with proper hsync and vsync
values) and then a restart has fixed the problem with the resolution.
I'm not sure why it happened to begin with, but at least it's an easy
fix.
