/etc/network/interfaces file and let NM to recreate it.

My problem was with an IMAP server (although I've had it with gmail as
well). I don't think evolution is broken per-se, I think the server was

Did you just install nm-applet? Usually you have to go into the System
Administration Networking and disable the devices by clicking on them
and hitting properties, then uncheck the enable this connection box.
Log out then Log back in and it should detect them/take over controlling
them.

The ljet4 driver prints correctly, also for me. But for me this is only
a workaround, it would be really nice, if I could use the HPLIP Toolbox
software (which only works with hplip-drivers, not with the ljet4
driver).
Unfortunately printing on page size DIN A6 doesn't work with the ljet4
driver.

I have a similar problem on a Dell Latitude D610 running Ubuntu 6.06 LTS
(Dapper Drake). Running 'alsamixer' and adjusting the volume for
Headphone worked.
Attached is the output from this script:

The same test has indeed been performed with a new install of Herd 4 and
the same problem occurs. The same ata related lines:
ata1.00: cmd 61/08:d0:71:6a:e4/00:00:16:00:00/40 tag 26 cdb 0x0 data

And the same buffer lines:

1) Press ESC: You can select the kernel you want to boot (the one with
the splash)

2) Selected? Now you press e.
3) Then as Scott explained
You'll see a new screen with a series of lines; the second one of which
is the kernel filename and command-line.

Maybe I can provide a solution for part of the mystery.
Some weeks ago, I was quite amazed to find that on the very same
machine, Scorched 3D ran on all user accounts but one. When started as
the latter, Scorched segfaulted throwing the very backtrace mentioned in
the initial report.
JAVA_HOME is unset by default. If you have it set, set it a correct
location.

I tried this in Dapper which worked for adjusting the headset volume:
Right click on the Volume Applet
Click on Open Volume Control
Adjust the Headset volume
