The above package worked for me, too. My touchpad stopped working

I also started having this problem suddenly after coming back from the weekend
trip.
My case is the Firefix shuts down when I clicked to another page to open.

What I remember is I downloaded also flash player from macromedia last

I mean that X can't get monitor specifications automatically for an
undetected monitor. It does not work fine by default xorg.conf; that

Have been suffering form the same problem myself for about a year. I am
on 8.10 (previous installation was an upgrade from 8.04, now have a
fresh install with the same result). Connection is at full speed when
booted into Windows. It only seems to take minutes for me to go from
10+Mbps to 1Mbps,
I'm using VLC-player now. But yes the problem still persist. It seems to
me that the problem is similar to this bug:

I can confirm that pasting these special symbols into Gedit makes gedit
substitute them...
