Everything is working now. I installed some fontsand uninstalled
others. Some applications like the system digital clock needed to have
its fonts set, but that did it. It seems the version update script did
not handle the font packages well.

Well, I tried in a relatively fresh Jaunty VM and still can't get
gcompris to crash. I couldn't find the specific activity that DTW was
used , everything I tried worked.
We can't put a whole new version of Gcompris into Jaunty, but we can

I can not un-install the offending gedit-plugins package.
I marked the updates I wanted to apply and hit update.

Just had the same issue here. A reboot didn't fix it but as the OP
found, using strace, it was crashing when it couldn't find an icon.
Terminal.svg was missing but didn't solve it. In my case, it couldn't
find picard.xpm (a music tagger) and was aborting. It ran fine as root,
for whatever reason.
Evolution + Google Calendar in Jaunty seems to be broken any idea?

I had/still have the same problem, but got a workaround. Not sure if it will
work for you, but you can try to mute the front channel in the volume control (
do not lower the volume, the headphones still depend on that volume level, just
mute it).

I upgraded from Ubuntu 8.10 to Ubuntu 9.04 and lost all sound. I read
this ticket. I'm not a linux expert by any stretch, but it seems as if
a problem is a missing file called libdbus-util.so. I followed most of

I have a similar issue. A very basic Sylvania F74 CRT Monitor that has
been recognized by at least 10 previous X installations going back
years. And I cannot now find a configuration tool or setting that lets
