After running Karmic beta install, I get told that the system will now
reboot.
The CD ejects, but then the screen just keeps flashing - sometimes with

I don't know which messages people here are talking about (instant or
e-mail), but messages from Empathy do enable a green mark on the tray
icon - but new e-mail messages (checked by gm-notify) are not causing a
green mark on the icon.

before bios update the brightness controls on the NC10 netbook did not

Ok I used evolutions backup and then on Karmic imported from the
archive.
I'm afraid image loading is still very slow on Karmic. The images

I did try frank's patches on top of ubuntu-karmic git tree - indeed, they did
reduce the no. of disconnects.
But, the main problem of pathetic performance during heavy network load still
persists. :(
