Whoops, I meant to say at least 3 machines, but I think I may have
tested it on as many as five machines that failed, and found only one
machine where the sound worked properly (from the live CD, as I recall).

It is specific to LD_LIBRARY_PATH, and not other environment variables.
For example, if you set some environment variable in your /etc/profile
or ~/.profile, most likely the software will detect it.

I wanted to check the status of this ancient bug, but on this particular
machine I only have a VMware Player with Ubuntu as a guest OS. It runs,

Howdy -
I had this problem for a while, across a few Ubuntu releases and a few
FF versions. I could reproduce the problem 100% of the time.
This week I had a hardware failure that resulted in me reinstalling the
O/S from scratch (Karmic), reloading my FF plugins, etc. I just
finished this, and
if we can separate the copyrighted stuff from the raw data, we
might just get around this.

For further info about papercuts criteria ,
I confirm this bug (no japanese fonts in pdf) gets solved installing
poppler-data.
So it seems the fix consists in adding a new dependency to evince and/or
japanese localization packages.
A simple fix, yet this bug has been opened 2 years. In 9.10, i still need to
install poppler-data manually (
