OK. I got into the default folder and found lock, but not .parents. I
deleted lock, shutdown firefox, restarted ubuntu, and was able to launch
firefox w/o re-installing it. When closing firefox and shutting down

I did recognize the same behaviour. After some research it seems that this is
not a bug but a feature. There is an option in BIOS to change the behaviour of
the fn-keys. Go to BIOS System Configuration Action Keys Mode:
- If the option is enabled, you can change brightness, loudness etc.
This also happens for me with java programs such as netbeans and
geogebra.
