I understand that it can probably be an issue with Sane but it is not hardware
related as it was working with simple-scan under Ubuntu 11.04 with the same
scanner.
All my system is installed with standard default softwares, it was working

The useless 12.04 upgrade has been deleted for a number of reasons, and the
original 10.10 recovered. The 12.04 was backed up immediately after the
update, and could be recovered.
This is the fourth attempt to get a successful upgrade, and the same thing
happened on a prior upgrade.

The only difference in the update you're speaking of, is that an apport
source file for desktopcouch was added to the package. Of course,

python3 -m tornado.test.runtests (this particular error relates to the
colored output of the test runner rather than any tests per se, and so
may be dependent on the value of $TERM).
The fix for this issue is in 2.2.1, not 2.1.1,
fix-committed in revno 558.

I have solved it now, but there is still a bug, as the transition to
Precise did not work automatically.
I had an old xorg.conf which defined only my old 1680x1050 Samsung
monitor which died a year ago. Natty and Oneiric happily worked with my
new Eizo with 1920x1080 and this file, Precise not.
I do not think this bug is limited to the French localization, it also
appears to affect English users. See the LibreOffice Bug 38242:
