I think this is related to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/hal/+bug/201433, except for the drivers involved. Actually looks like the drivers are not working correctly, but APCI is, so why not just use ACPI in hal for changing the brightness? -- Brightness control via ACPI in HP
