I'm not so sure about this anymore. During the upgrade Ubuntu creates new
initrd images for every installed kernel including backups and temporarily uses

I'm not sure that #206008 is a duplicate of this bug. This one is about
layout switching while #206008 is about forgetting the only configured
layout and falling back to US layout. This just happened to me upgrading
from 7.10 to 8.04 RC1. Really a showstopper bug.

Public bug reported:
After upgrading from 7.10 to 8.04 RC1 all unit settings are forgotten.
The weather applet shows imperial units (metric before), printing
defaults now to letter (A4 before) and the keyboard layout switched back
to US (This is bug #206008). Only the sensors applet still shows C°
Public bug reported:
Using 32 bit apps on AMD64 with ia32-libs doesn't show the window icons
on the top left corner of the windows and in the window list. This
worked in 7.10 but doesn't in 8.04 RC1. Examples are the 32 bit versions
of Firefox nightlies (Minefield) and the stable Seamonkey release
Mine also only shows
(**) Option "XkbLayout" "us"
(**) Keyboard0: XkbLayout: "us"
I don't think there's anything wrong with the X server itself but with how
Ubuntu is setting it up. My xorg.conf is devoid of any layout settings.

Removing .glipper/ resolved the not-starting-issue in hardy for me. It
does seem to have a problem with an empty history though an crashes when
trying to look at the empty list. Seems to crash from time to time
"spontaneously" too.

Do you use the keyboard layout switching utility or otherwise a non-
default keyboard layout? There are several open bugs about problems with
keyboard layouts in hardy.

I've just run into this after upgrading to hardy. First thought it's bug
162993, but at least svg_loader.so is present and the 32 bit Minefield
binary is looking in /usr/lib/ instead of /usr/lib32.

The Chips F69000 is a rather old graphics chipset. Currently Ubuntu
